THE NTCSL 6-A-SIDE
The Northern Tasmanian Christian League runs during the winter and involves over 250 kids from a number of different schools in the Launceston area. Its not open to clubs around the region so its emphasis can be more about fun and lots of touches of the football, than winning. Played as a 6-a-side format on smaller grounds its suitable for kids at all levels off skill and fitness. Age groups range from under 8's through to under 14's with the competition open to boys and girls.
The NTCSL has developed a number of changes to the rules to allow kids to compete evenly and ensure the games to flow smoothly. Some of the variations to the standard rules of soccer are not allowing players in under 12's and up to be able to kick the ball over half way from a goal kick or the hands of the goal keeper on the full, subs can only be made when the ball is out for a goal, corner or free kick and in the under 8's and 10's players can not kick more than 3 goals in a game. This allows the kids who struggle to get in and have a more even go while the more developed can excel but not at the cost of others. Once a player has kicked their 3 goals they may still have full participation but they are now encouraged to involve others in order to succeed. The 6-a-side style of soccer develops the kids short game and ball skills in preparation for the 11-a-side format. Once the kids qualify for under 14's the NTCSL offer an 11-a-side team in the Northern Tasmanian Junior Soccer Association played at Churchill park for those that wish. This forms the first stepping stone to competing at a senior level. These sides go under the banner of Northern Rangers.
There are 5 grounds at the Riverside complex and the facilities include full canteen, toilets and plenty of car parking. The NTCSL provide teams with up to date strips for the entire year. Players are required to supply their own shorts and socks. Match balls and Referee's are also supplied for all games so its pretty much turn up and play.
