With seeding matches and pre season cups behind us, Northern Rangers got down to business on Saturday winning all 6 matches in league round 1.
Under 12 boys defeated George Town 6-3. Matthew Collins and Josh Rowlands were the better players in a game that saw Rangers using the width a little better, and crossing into the box from wide, and passing the ball better in general play.
14 Red were 8-1 winners over Riverside Pumas. Harry Thannhauser was a solid contributor in a good team performance, that simply confirms that this is the team to beat if anyone else in the chasing pack has eyes on a premiership.
14 Blue were 8-1 winners over their Southern Raiders opponents, with Chris Worthington looking after the boys in the absence of coach Ben Jones. After a few early season losses by the narrowest of margins, these boys have now hit their straps and there should be no looking back. Jacob Pedley again scored at will. This week will be harder, but the boys now have the confidence and this should be a telling factor.
14 White also took 3 points from their match against the Westside Colts, a team that we had lost to during seeding, and who were last week's cup runners up. We were in a different class in the first half and up by 3 to nil at the break. The score finished 3-1 as the boys tired in the second half. Playing with the bare 11 makes the late fade forgivable. Brayden Murrell and Daniel De Ruiter were dominant down the left side.
Senior girls take a bow. The Cup winning Westside Jets would have expected an easy 3 points from this match, but were sorely mistaken as the Rangers girls prevailed 4-3. The Jets were more intent on pushing than playing, and seemed surprised by our desire to play the wide spaces. The Jets kept coming straight down the middle, and Leah Heys kept turning them away. Tyler Walters and Hannah Kapinga were also good players in a great team effort.
16 Red defeated the Cavaliers twice in as many weeks, this time by 2 to 1, and again after conceding first. Our playing style was again a highlight as was the first half strike by Rory Ward. In a best on ground performance, Wade Larkins provided a master class in over lapping from fullback, with a fantastic run down the wing in the second half, finishing with a clinical touch into the net. Josh Hinds provided the killer ball, one of many for the day.
