The annual Northern Rangers Cricket match took place on Monday the 3rd of January 2011 and this year it was a 25 over aside match rather than the traditional 20/20.
Oytun Aykiran’s Turkish XI won the toss and sent the CAXI into bat, and it was pretty much downhill from here.
Marshall Pooley hit a quick fire 25 that included 2 sixes and scored 16 of the 23 runs from a Sam Lincoln over to set the CAXI up early at none for 36 after just three overs.
Mark Jefferson took a fine catch to dismiss Pooley but Ryan Bosker (20) and Luke Snare (28) continued the damage to have the CAXI sitting in nicely at 1 for 68 before Bosker was bowled by Luke Connors who finished with figures of 1 for 18 from 3 overs .
A small recovery followed as the Turkish XI took some quick wickets dismissing Hingston, Langerak and Nicholson in single figures but Joey Hammond steadied the ship with an unbeaten 33 with support from Brendan Lichtendonk who retired early on 15.
The other bowling highlights for the Turkish XI included 1 for 25 from Derek Schipper’s 3 overs and a tidy 1 for 8 from Ben Jones’ 2 overs.
The CAXI finished their innings with a towering 7 for 182 from 25 overs, setting the Turks a monumental task of 183 from 25 overs for victory.
The Turkish run chase never really got going with Sam Luck (9) and Sasa Jurkovic (2) tied down early by Tenzing Anderson who finished with figures of 2 for 13 from 3 overs which included the prize scalp of Oytun Aykiran for a duck late in the innings and Lichtendonk who finished with 2 for 9 off three overs.
From there Jago took control of the Turkish batsmen snaring Sam Luck, John Fisher (8) and Derek Schipper (9) and had 3 for 12 from 2 overs.
Mark Jefferson (9*) provided some entertainment for the crowd as he went some 24 deliveries before scoring a run, while as mentioned before Aykiran kept up his average of a duck late in the innings.
Connors was the best of the Turkish batsmen with 19 and Ben Jones who hit 18 runs. The Turks were dismissed for 124 in reply but could not get close and will have to wait another 12 months for another crack at the cup. For the mean time, it remains the property of the Captain Australia XI. |
