The Northern Rangers Women caught Somerset by surprise with a fine display, thanks in part to Bec Wheatley’s amazing run of goal scoring form. Wheatley scored her 5th hat trick of the season to lead Rangers to a 6-1 home win over the more fancied Somerset out fit who are sitting in 3rd spot.
Anna Stackhouse opened the scores for the home side before Hudson and Wheatley added to make a 3-0 half time score.
The second half was just as clinical infront of goal with a further goal to Hudson who is forming quiet a partnership with Wheatley up front, and another 2 goals to Wheatley herself.
Unfortunately for Summer Edmunds, the clean sheet evaded her as Somerset scored a consolation goal.
The Ranger Women 6-1 winners in a fine display.
Ian Loft full of praise for his girls, saying the Somerset coach came up to him after the game to congratulate him, and speak of his surprise at the way the Rangers played.
Jason Smith said after the game,
“Somerset over the last few weeks have had slow starts, and we were going to hit them hard early. We did this very well, scoring in the 6th minute. I have always said, “once we score early in a game, look out”.
Somerset sitting in the Top 4 would have hoped to stay in the Top 4, and use this game as practice, but they did not count on our endeavour to upset the Top teams in the run home to the end of the season. We play the teams currently in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th (tough run home, but no pressure on us, we just want to show them what we can do).
Half time score was 3-0 to us.
Expecting Somerset to shake off their usual slow starts, we started cautiously in the 2nd half. We scored a further 3 to their 1. It ended 6-1, and showed us that we can beat the sides in the Top 4.
It was the highest score against Somerset so far this year, City only beat them 5-1.
If we can beat Ulverstone, Allies, Devonport, & L’ton United on the way home, and some other results go our way, we might slip into the Top 4 , then watch us perform.” |
