After last weeks poor performance in the Statewide Cup game, Rangers had to travel to Devonport to get back to the Northern League games. With a full squad available and told that to make an impact the pressure was on them to begin living up to expectations. For the first time this season Rangers came out hungry from the fist whistle, while other weeks in the League they have left it until opponents scored before they even start, this week from lessons learned they came out fighting from the word go.
Within the first 20 minutes of the game they totally dominated throughout the park, creating chance after chance keeping the Devonport keeper the busiest player on the park, through this pressure, where they shut down every opportunity given to the Devonport side Rangers pushed forward and it was only in the sixth minute, top goal-scorer John Wani after beating 2 defenders put his name on the scoresheet with a strike that left the keeper with no chance.
With pressure on the Devonport defence, it became clear this young Rangers side were out to prove a point, the passing at times in the opening minutes were first class and compared to the previous week were of a different class with shot after shot on the Devonport goal it was only a matter of time before they added to the opening goal.
Zac Pearce, Hayden Vanderveld, John Wani, Josh Burk and Yitay Towns all having shots on goal that went close before Hayden on the 11th minute found the back of the net, making it 2-0 and with further efforts John Wani got his second for the day on the 20th minute, and Zac Pearce making it 4 - 0 on the 22nd minute. Rangers continued the pressure until hal-time but the Devonport side had defended well for the remainder of the half and went in 4-0 down at half-time.
With changes to the line-up, and Devonport coming out for the second-half more determined the Rangers side lost the momentum and whereas in previous weeks began bad and built up as the game went on this time they began well and fell away, perhaps thinking the game was over, only to find Devonport scoring in the 30th minute followed by another goal in the 32nd minute the Rangers team and Coaching staff were now concerned as time after time Rangers were making mistakes and giving the ball away too easy and putting themselves under pressure when there was no need.
4-2 winners at the end of the day was a good result but chances missed in the first half could have easily doubled the score had the finishing been better. |
