With expectations high following 2 good nights training, the Rangers Under 18s side with the addition of the former Captain of the side Tom Burk went into the Statewide Cup against Kingborough Lions from Hobart and fell way short of delivering the performance needed to progress in this competition.
In the opening 15 minutes the Lions completely dominated the game and set the pace for how this game was going to be played. It was the 12th minute before any Rangers player even touched the ball and on the fifteenth minute were picking the ball out of the net.
Coach John Crooks made a couple of substitutions following the goal and was hoping to get the side settled which was looking promising within the next few minutes but just as quickly as they came into the game it all fell away.
With the score only 1-0 to the visitors at half-time Rangers although had not played well, there was still the hope that they would be able to turn things around as they have done in League games this year. Instead of lifting the first half performance which was really poor by their standards, they came out and somehow managed to play at an all time low, failing to win balls, bad passing, lack of communication and mistakes happening all over the park the substitutions even failed to turn the game or impress. The only highlight of the game for Rangers was when the first decent ball was played through for John Wani who collected it ran through and with a one-on-one with the goalkeeper and remained composed to round the keeper and blast the ball home.
At this time it was already 3 nil, and now at 3-1 it would have been good to see Rangers press on but with more errors and mistakes on their part the Lions went on to finish the game as a competition scoring a further 3 times and every goal created by bad play on the part of Rangers.
Rangers were never in this game and it appeared as if they did not want to be here on the day, and for the Coach to have to name a 3-2-1 performance for this game, wish him well. |
