With NRFC not having the use of the NTCA this game was played at Birch Ave on the number 2 ground which is small and after the rains that fell this week was in very good condition and perfect weather conditions.
Burnie had only 10 players available due to others still involved with other sports and would find this their first game of the 2011 season all the harder as Rangers had a full squad available. From the kick-off Burnie had decided that playing off-side was the best hope. After 20 min and against the run of play Burnie managed to go in front when a long through ball was played through and the 2 Rangers central defenders let Burnie’s lone striker slip through between them.
Rangers continued to press forward and were winning all the balls in midfield and set up a number of scoring opportunities but it was not until the 32nd minute when Rangers forward Hayden Vanderveld from the edge of the 18 yd box hit the ball sweetly which went in the goal off of the far post to level the scores before half-time. During the break the Rangers coaching staff went over some of the problems and with the assistance of Snr Coach Adam Whitemore who explained what needed to happen in the second half to the players.
The game continued to be dominated by Rangers with a lot of work by Yitay Towns and Josh Burk both who worked tirelessly and won just about every ball in the middle of the park, and with the Rangers Coach using the full compliment of substitutions to their advantage began to wear down the Burnie 10. But it was not until the 71st minute when no less than 4 Rangers players were in a four-on-one situation with the Burnie goalkeeper who was left to concede Rangers going in front with the final touch of the ball from John Wani.
As happened last week with this Rangers side, having full control they lifted and went further ahead on the 75th minute again through John Wani who this time slotted past the keeper on a one-on-one, with more chances being created and near misses from Kody Heys Zac Pearce, Josh Burke and Nigel Veldhuis it was a matter of time which fell to HaydenVenderveld who put the game way out of reach of Burnie by adding goal number 4 on the 80th minute.
Rangers youth policy is paying dividends and the Coaching staff are using the rotation of players well that they have good depth and quality in the squad and a number of the players becoming versatile in the roles they are given. |
