In wet conditions to say the least, the Under 18s arrived at Prospect at 9:30am expecting the game to be called off, but without any 'official' officials the game was given the go-ahead by everyone there as nobody bothered to turn up to say otherwise, which would lead to some controversy later in the day.
Our young lads took to the field and were certainly motivated more than they have been in the last 2 or 3 games. From the whistle they began to play in a very positive style (while conditions should have dictated how the game should be played) Rangers went into attack playing as they can, with a mix of short and long passes, and using the wings well.
Rangers in the opening 20 minutes played some wonderful exhibition football, it was a shame that there was not more spectators in attendance to witness the quickness of the one touch football, the change in direction and the overall contribution of each and every player.
During this period Rangers managed to score no less than 4 times and it could have been more. The defence were outstanding with Alex Bligh in goal having nothing at all to do in the first half, midfielders were in total control with Josh Burk having an outstanding game in the middle assisted by Lian who also worked tirelessly through the middle of a very wet and muddy centre of the ground and both brought the wide players into the game by feeding excellent balls.
With total domination of the game Rangers lost a bit of shape as they sent forward an attack after attack but had no more to show for their efforts by half-time.
Coaches John Crooks and Gareth Otley were delighted in the dressing room at half time and congratulated the overall team play in such bad conditions, but were very quick to bring the lads back to reality by stressing the need to keep their shape regardless of the score. Senior Coach Adam Whitemore let his feelings known to the lads simply by stating that he was most impressed, especially by the movement off-the-ball.
The second half continued where the first half left off with Rangers dominating the game and managed to score 3 more times with another couple which were disallowed by the referee.
Under the playing conditions this was not only three points won but restored belief that this Under 18s side will provide the Senior Premiership side with ongoing players for the future. |
