The Under 18’s were going out against Ulverstone for the first time after the sad loss of our coach Jeff McHugh. John Crooks kindly raised his hand to help the club in its hour of need, and the club has gratefully accepted Crook’s offer to coach the under 18’s for the remainder of the season, appointing him officially late on Saturday afternoon.
Jeff’s son Joel was unavailable this week with school commitments, but the side was determined to do Joel proud, and also dedicated this game to his father and their coach.
A minutes silence was observed prior to kickoff.
John Crooks started off from where Jeff had left things, and with the assistance of Phil VanDonselaar, Andrew Nicholson and Gareth Otley, had the boys well and truly up for this occasion.
Action at both ends of the park, eventually became a goal for the Rangers when Lain Thwang poked his head up from mid field, he saw an opening in the top corner of the goal, and shot brilliantly to open the scores and put the visitors in front.
Only 5 minutes had past and Rangers were on again, this time a lovely cross came in from Nelson Namsang and Kiren Van Donselaar rose at the back post to nod it home expertly like he had been doing it for years.
John Wani netted his first goal for the club also when he made the most of a half chance in the box from a lose ball to make it 3-0 at the half time.
Kiren Van Donselaar added to his personal tally in the second half to make it 4-0 before Ulverstone grabbed a consolation goal.
4-1 the final result and a great way to remember the good times the boys have had with Jeff. |
