The Reserves were looking for a strong first half against Ulverstone to try and form a platform on which to finish their disappointing season on a high. It may sound like a bias statement, but the Reserves have genuinely been good enough to beat most of their opposition this year, but a lack of goals from more contributors and defensive errors have cost them dearly this season.
The start couldn’t have gone much worse as Rangers were behind early, the keeper guarding his near post when the Ulverstone striker chipped to the back post to go in front.
Rangers were behind by even more shortly after when the referee decided he needed to have some involvement in the game, pointing to the spot for some reason after John Fisher went into the air to contest a header with arms by his side, still you can do little when the cards are against you and the penalty was dispatched.
Rangers pushed hard to get back into the game and found their first goal when a cross from Josh VanZetten was struck by Marcus Vanderharst, the parried shot fell to Chad Honey who scored directly in front with no keeper to beat.
After half time Rangers went into over drive to find the equaliser, but couldn’t quiet get the final touch to send a player through, that and the inconsistent calls from the man in the middle made it hard to know when it was football and when it was rugby.
A corner from Vanderharst was eventually headed in by Joey Summers to level the scores. No further goals could be found and 2-2 was the result, a gutsy come back from the Reserves who haven’t responded well to conceding in the past, but today they turned a corner.
Whitemore’s Comments
“Great effort. Exactly the response we were after. To come back from 2 goals down, and the way in which we did it was fabulous.” |
