Reserves Draw 3 All

The Reserves could have put their season back on track with a win over Ulverstone, but could only manage a draw.

The Reserves looked great in the first half, lacked a little urgency but really moved the ball around well, and defended with strength.

Ulverstone got the opener when Rangers front post failed to mark up from a corner and the headed shot went in unguarded.

Rangers restored things to level pegging shortly after when Chad Honey got enough on the ball in a close range scramble and snitched it under the keeper.

McBeath put Rangers in front with a fine finish across the keeper after he made space and cut across the box with space.

Rangers held the lead to half time, and for most of the second half until Alhammadi fouled within 15 seconds of coming onto the park, the resulting free kick sailed across the box to the back post and was headed home unchallenged again.

Rangers thought they had got the winner in the 80th minute when Rashid Alhammadi put his wrong right with a neat through ball to a diagonally running Chad Honey, and Honey placed the shot home on an acute angle perfectly and into the side netting for 3-2.

Into stoppage time and a free was awarded against Ben deRuiter, it was in the box, no questioning that, but the free looked to have been doctored with the call coming from the linesman that it was for an elbow, yet the player fell forward, and not outward, as would have had to have been the case for such a foul, but you can argue all you like, the foul was awarded, initially by the  centre referee outside the box, before his assistant pointed it into the box and a penalty awarded.

The spot kick was converted for a 3 all margin, Rangers can start to ask themselves what they must to do to win a game in the reserves in Ulverstone after three controversial late equalisers on the trot now.  A very disappointing end to a game they truly deserved to win this time around.

Whitemore said after the game, “Disappointed the Reserves didn’t win. We played brilliantly at times in the first half, switching play and dominating possession but lost our way and certainly ran out of legs in the second half.

We need to learn to close games out in the final minutes.

Den deRuiter was again excellent, Josh VanZetten bright and sharp, Girrad impressed in his midfield role and Chad Honey continues to be more disciplined with the ball, making him the most dangerous striker in the league.

We will need to rotate this side this week to get a better level of performance and more legs in the side”.
